The captain of the Indian cricket team, Rohit Sharma, has set out to take on his country in South Africa in the final Test match in a fortnight.
Sharma is hoping to secure the series win after an early-season dip in form that has seen him go just five for 34 against Australia.
The 35-year-old was part of India’s World Cup-winning squad last year but has struggled to stay fit and his recent form has led to speculation that he could be rested for the series.
Sharma has been out of action since the World T20 in England, after undergoing a back surgery.
India are in their third Test series of the season after coming to an abrupt end in the last match of the previous round in Melbourne.
They were beaten by Australia in the first Test, before winning the series 2-1 in Cape Town in the second Test.
Sharma played only six innings in that series and was sent off by the batsman.
It was a huge blow for India, who have lost five consecutive series matches, the longest run since the series ended in 2006.
It will be Sharma’s second Test series after being sidelined by back surgery for a year.
The captain will take on South Africa, a team he has played against in the past.
In his last match, India beat New Zealand 2-0 in the fourth Test in Cape May, with Rohit bowling a sensational 103 for 6 in a match that was marred by a series of errors.
He has not scored a Test century since a series against Zimbabwe in 2015.
He played in the 2015 World Cup but was dropped after the team was embarrassed in the opening game.
He had returned to action in Australia earlier this month after missing the previous Test.
