By Nayan BhattacharyaMEXICO CITY—India’s cricket team will play their first game against Malaysia in Malacca on Friday (March 23) for the first time in four years.
It is a new start for the team after its tour of Malaysia in 2014, which was the last time India played a full series of a Test match in the country.
The team had won its first five games and was only two points behind Australia at the time.
It won three of the five, including the final against England in Malaysia, but lost to Pakistan in the final.
India has not played in Malaysia since that tour, but India’s squad is set to play on Friday.
“We will be taking on the team from Malaysia in their first match of the series,” India’s captain Virat Kohli said.
“That is a big step in our development, especially for India.
We want to be the best team in the world and I think we will be able to achieve that.”
India’s coach VVS Laxman told the media after India’s 3-2 defeat in Malaysia that he was not expecting any special atmosphere in Malaya, where the team will also play against Australia and Pakistan.
“It will be an ordinary cricket match and we are not expecting anything special,” Laxmann said.
Laxman also said that the team would not have any special celebrations or rituals.
“The only thing we will have is a normal cricket match.
We will play the ball at a normal pace and there will be no special celebrations, no rituals,” he said.
India’s tour to Malaysia in early 2018 saw the team lose all three of its games in the first five days.
India was also the only team to score a hundred in the match, while the team was held to an underwhelming 85 runs in the three matches.
India’s first Test in Malaysia was played in January 2018 and ended with a 0-0 draw.
